So I saw X-Men: First Class, and ultimately I wound up feeling, about it, the way I feel about the actual X-Men comics: I hated about half of it (the Shaw/war plot, the totally nonsensical 'age of the atom' crap, stupid deaths, clunky writing) and loved about half of it (virtually everything involving the kids, mutant politics, intra-team clashes, etc.).

Actually, that shakes out to almost exactly the things I love and hate about the comics, too, which I guess makes it a pretty great adaptation.

But I used to be hugely into X-Men, so it feels kind of cool to feel that little spark of interest in it again. If the movie had had Nightcrawler instead of his crappy dad (and I don't mean Mystique, ALTHOUGH I SHOULD) I would basically be unable to stop myself from being all the fuck over it right now. As it is, I am still pretty sure I will be happy to read all the fic ever.

I know there's a kinkmeme, but is there anything else? I have to admit, I don't love kinkmemes for fandoms I actually want to get involved with instead of just browsing around in.

I mean, I guess I could just get back into X-Men fandom, but since that involves A: reading comics from a hundred million thousand miles away and B: currently, a world without Kurt some of my favorite cha-- oh, let's face it, I'm talking about Kurt. Anyway, comics piss me off too much, so nah.

Also: has anyone written Sean/Hank yet? IDEK, but I saw it and I'd read it. Or even Charles/Hank, if Charles can stop mooning over Erik for two seconds. POSSIBLY EVEN CHARLES/HANK THAT INVOLVES COMPLICATED FEELINGS ABOUT ERIK AND MYSTIQUE.

Aw, what up, X-Men. ♥

I will never not be disappointed that that isn't canon!

Darling, there is so much in canon to be disappointed by. I can't even count the ways.

X-men is that fandom that I just can't quit. (Along with Star Wars, though... less so that lately. The novels have gotten so fail that even I've been able to not read them and not feel guilty about it these days.)

Though, much as I liked X-men First Class, as soon as I got home I had to reread the X-factor arc where Darwin becomes a god of death or some shit and is walking the earth like a badass. What the shit, movie.

Yeah, I was piiiiiiiiissed about Darwin dying. 1) That dude was great. 2) What the fuck?

IDK much about AOA!Kurt, is he awesome? I'm so jaded about non!616 Kurts after the way they COMPLETELY FUCKED UP Ultimate!Kurt. (Evo!Kurt is still cool, however.)

BTW, we totally had a Star Wars marathon the other day, and I thought of you.

(Hope this replies to the right comment, I'm using an app that I haven't figured out all the way yet.)

I have actually not read all of AoA yet! I have a couple of the associated stories and they are so gloriously 90s. But from what I gather, AoA Kurt is basically a noble pirate. And he and 616 Wolverine had some moments that made me tear up in the most recent X-Force because I'm a wet kleenex.

the totally nonsensical 'age of the atom' crap

Thatt's actually one thing I LOVE about comics movies, that they're all based on the most outdated and ridiculous science possible. Like, these universes have had the same basic premises and origin stories for decades and decades, so that now they sound utterly ridiculous (being exposed to radiation makes you mutate to have magical powers, not get cancer; being bitten by a radioactive spider rewrites your DNA instead of giving you cancer; etc.) but they're so central to the franchise that they just have to keep harping away at them. It's amazing. I love watching people assert with a straight face that radiation will make people disfigured by nuclear contamination stronger.

See, the really silly thing is, THAT'S not even what I take issue with. Radiation causes mutation, okay. The problem is, most of the mutants in the movie are too old for that to make any fucking sense!

It would be one thing if they showed, like, three older mutants, and then a ton of really young ones (which is basically how the comics worked, IIRC, and how sad that the comics make more sense).

Instead you have like... Shaw, Erik, Charles, Mystique, and Azazel, who all clearly pre-date the nuclear age, and Emma who is old enough to also be there. I think it's implied that Hank and maybe Angel were born with their mutations, too. And IDK how old Riptide is, so maybe him too. Possibly also even Darwin!

So basically bad science is bad science and I can roll with that, but this is like, a BASIC ISSUE OF DATES, here.
