Real Life Update of Importance

So this journal is kind of defunct these days, but I just realized that a fair amount of people who are friends with me here aren't Facebook friends, or don't check Facebook often, and I should probably put something here too just to, IDK, get it out there.

Early yesterday morning, there was a massive (accidental!) fire in my apartment here in Japan. I'm okay. I'm in the hospital for very minor burns and smoke inhalation, but the doctor's already told me that if I wanted to go home, I could have even done so yesterday... if I had a home to go to. (No, really, he actually said that. What a winner.) My apartment is completely destroyed, and 98% of my stuff is gone. I'm currently homeless in Japan, which is like a hipster's dream come true.

The good news: Again, I'm fine. I'm staying in the hospital for one more night, mostly for stress and exhaustion. When I get out, I have several options for temporary housing, and everyone here is being absolutely amazing to me. In less than two days I've already gotten several donations from friends and been promised clothes and even furniture when I find a new place to live. I have my wallet and my passport and my phone (and even a laptop and mobile internet!), and enough money to see me through in the short term, especially with the support I've been getting.

The bad news: I have no idea when, or even if, I'll have a new permanent place to live, plus I obviously have no address. Renting a new apartment here is super hard and expensive for foreigners as it is, and any new place is likely to make me pay a massive amount in key money and security, if they let me rent at all. I also don't know what the insurance situation was at my apartment and don't know if I'm going to have to pay, or how much. I have no clothes except what people have given me and... well, I basically have nothing except what I listed above. So that all just really sucks.

I'm really lucky in a lot of ways, and I'm really grateful for them. The fire started not only in my bedroom but in my bed (it was a blanket that caught fire), so it's absolutely a miracle that I'm alive and unhurt. It's amazing that I live in a country that takes care of its people as much as this one does. Even the hospital food is pretty good! I think we should all try to be grateful and relieved as much as possible, and be exceptionally thankful that no one else was hurt or even, hopefully, displaced for more than a couple of days.

Obviously, what little online activity I have is sort of going to screech to a halt for the time being. I had to default on Yuletide and hiatus on my RPs. (Oh, hey, I should probably freeze my WoW account...) But like I said, I do have internet, so you can message/email/IM me any time. ♥

Dear Yuletide Author!

...I'm sorry that I totally did not write this letter before you got matched with me! But it's here now. LOOK, HERE IT IS.

So first of all, thank you in advance for writing me a Yuletide fic! I say this every year, and every year it's true, that I will probably be happy with just about anything you write, as long as you're happy with it. More than anything else, I want you to enjoy this challenge and write something you like.

That said, some likes and dislikes )

Sirens )

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang )

Revenge )

And I think that's it! If you DESPERATELY need a question answered, author, you can ask it here: I'll leave anon commenting on and IP logging off.

Thanks again! I can't wait to read what you'll write for me.

Re: My continued descent into Breaking Bad hysteria.

OH MY GOD.

I THINK I STOPPED BREATHING ABOUT HALFWAY THROUGH THAT EPISODE.

THERE ARE TEARS IN MY EYES.

AND THERE'S STILL ONE MORE TO GO.

I don't even know if I'll be able to handle whatever's coming next.

...OH MAN I'M GOING TO BE ON VACATION THEN, TOO, I'LL HAVE TO WATCH IN AN INTERNET CAFE OR SOMETHING D: LOL SHAKING AND CRYING IN SEMI-PUBLIC.

TV Roundup Time!

Fall is here, and while back in New Hampshire that meant beautiful leaves turning and shit like that, here it means there's lots of American TV to carry me through my boredom. Last year, I was too busy to really catch anything new, but between my back injury and packing up to move (I have a gooorgeous new apartment, y'all), I've had nothing to do, so it's basically been NOTHING BUT PREMIERES for me.

Let's see how everything stacks up!

New Shows )

Returning Shows )

Unpremieres: Shows that just ended or are mid-run )

Meanwhile, I quit The Big Bang Theory and Grey's Anatomy without bothering to watch the premieres. I just... can't seem to drum up the interest in either of them. OTOH, totally going to be catching Once Upon a Time when that comes out. My beloved Cougar Town is pushed to midseason, and I guess so is 30 Rock? :( Mad Men is pushed to FOREVER (seriously, MARCH, WTF). Game Of Thrones and Sirens are both back in April, and Misfits... when the hell is Misfits back, anyway?

So... anyway, I like TV. Let's talk about TV.

Breaking Bad, Part 2

So first I want to say that my issues with Breaking Bad are, as of season three, largely resolved: the main female characters start to develop agency and become interesting in their own right, and I am pleased with that.

But mostly, I just want to say that I'm almost done with season three and

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HOLY SHIT.

LIKE. SERIOUSLY. HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS.

IF YOU WANT A SHOW THAT WILL MAKE YOU SAY "HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS" EVERY OTHER EPISODE, WATCH BREAKING BAD.

OMG also ALL THE EMMYS EVER FOR AARON PAUL. Sorry, supporting actors on every other show, none of you will ever be as good.

eta AND NOW I'M DONE WITH SEASON THREE AND TEARS FALLING AS I FALL IN A SLOW CIRCLE AND DIE.

And then she DISAPPEARED

Hey all,

Just a quick notice that summer camp season, my favorite time of year (I'm serious!) has rolled around, and so I'll be vanishing from the internet for about a week while I go off and poison enrich young minds out in the wilderness of Japan (if by "wilderness" I mean "beautiful dormitory with hot springs for all and beer for the grownups"). I even got a promotion this year -- what were they thinking!?

Anyway, if I don't answer your comments/PMs/Facebook messages/emails/comment in your LJs/whatever, that's why.

For RP purposes (yeah, that's happening again, who knew?)! I'll be on for the rest of tonight and some of tomorrow morning, but heading off at noon... AKA Sunday night, for most of you. As for my characters:

The Let's Bring Heartful Cheer Post

(Pre-post disclaimer: I took way too much medication this morning and now I am super loopy. This post MAY NOT MAKE MUCH SENSE.)

Anyway.

Hey guys.

So like I said, I don't talk about my personal life much here, preferring vastly to stick to TV ramblings, but...

Well, without getting too far into it, I've been having some health problems for the past month or so (what else is new~) and it's looking like they may be starting to get more serious. Like, into the very slightly scary level of serious.

This, combined with living in a foreign country, combined with feeling humiliated every time someone laughs at me for having old lady problems (it's a slipped/herniated disc, okay, apparently this is hilarious to my coworkers), combined with my general sense of feeling immensely trapped and isolated here, is really getting me right the fuck down.

I don't really want to have in-depth conversations about how I feel about all this or whatever, because honestly, I have Feelings about my health and they would take up many many pages. I just need to get it out there that I feel absolutely terrible right now.

But actually, what I want is to ask for this to be the HAPPY-ASS AWESOME FUN TME COMMENT SECTION to my DEPRESSING, WHINY-ASS, EMBARRASSING post. So please: in the comments, post whatever has made you the most happy lately. Fic, pics, memes, inside jokes, videos/songs (although I can't access them at work, which is where I'm at, lingering while I wait to get to my doctor's appointment). WHATEVER. Help me out, friendslist.

FEMINISM RUINS EVERYTHING.

...Okay, obviously I do not believe that is true.

But it is interesting how, the older I get and the more aware/attuned to feminist issues in media I become, the harder it is to enjoy certain things without a healthy amount of reserve and a big grain of salt.

Case in point: I'm currently in the middle of season two of Breaking Bad. And from a purely technical and artistic standpoint, it really is an astonishingly good show: the dialogue is great, the acting is fantastic, and the cinematography is probably the best I've ever seen on television. Part of me is really, really enjoying it.

And yet... every time I watch an episode, I'm uncomfortably aware of how much a Man's World the show takes place in. Sure, the gender divide in the cast is more or less equal on the surface (the leads are both men, but the secondary cast is two and two right now)... but the women function solely as wives and girlfriends, existing to throw wrenches in Walter and Jesse's (and Hank's) domestic lives when need be, to assist their storylines when they need assisting.

And as I watch it, I think: how could a show that is so accomplished on so many levels fail so completely at something like this? Or rather, if it does fail at this, can it really be that good of a show?

Obviously, none of this is new thinking at all, and I am retreading a road that many have taken before me.

I think this is just the first time I've watched a show that was really supposed to be of superior quality, yet stuck in my craw so very much over gender issues. I can look at Mad Men, Game of Thrones, and other "quality" series, critically, and there are a lot of things I can say about them... But I can't say that the portrayal of gender isn't highly nuanced. I know the focus of Breaking Bad is on Walter and Jesse, but I don't see why it still couldn't do the same. It seems to be pretty good on racial issues, for example.

Well, here's hoping it gets better. *crosses fingers* Either way, I just felt the need to rant about it, quite suddenly, because it's actually sort of ruining my enjoyment of the show.

PS, an actual fandom entry

I have an idea for a Sirens/Misfits crossover. I feel like there are maybe two people on the entire internet who would actually want to read this. Thoughts?

I may just break it in two. Ever since Robert Sheehan decided to be a little douche and leave Misfits, I've been wanting to write a "Nathan dies for real" fic. (I hear he's going to anyway, so why not?)

ADWD Spoiler Post: The Third and Final!

So, we're only a week away from the book going on general sale, now. But if anyone wants to go ahead and ruin the second half of A Dance with Dragons, here it is...

Again, these are going to be, for the most part, summaries of what's happening, rather than specific details. MAJOR spoilers will be whitetexted for your pleasure.

The second half of the book does, indeed, pick up from where AFFC left off, for better or worse.

Which means...

THE ANSWERS YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. )

That's where the cast of AFFC picks up in ADWD. As for the plot we've been following in this book...:

IF I LOOK BACK, I AM LOST. )

Okay, George. Bring on the next one, I'm ready to go.

WELL, I FINISHED THE BOOK.

So I just finished A Dance with Dragons, to begin the long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long wait for the next part of the ASOIAF story.

ADWD Spoiler Post: Part 2!

So I spent, like, basically all of today reading ADWD, which was a pretty great life decision, and now I'm about halfway through -- i.e., too far ahead to have any desire to go back and do chapter-by-chapter spoilers. Plus, my impression is that people don't really want that, anyway.

The last post represents the first 125 pages or so, so now you know more or less how the book starts. I think from here it's best to just do some summarizing and Points of Interest of the first half of ADWD:

HERE THAR BE SPOILERS )

So basically, all the concurrent-with-AFFC stuff has now happened, from what I can tell. The second half of the book looks to be post-AFFC... possibly with some other characters reappearing? I genuinely don't know.

A Dance with Dragons SPOILER POST

It was requested on [livejournal.com profile] ontd_asoiaf that I post spoilers for ADWD, since I'm apparently the first member to get their copy. So as not to clutter up the comm or accidentally ruin anything for anyone by accident, I'm putting it all here.

I guess this is also sort of doubling as my commentary.

SO DO NOT CLICK ON THE CUT UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING AND READY TO READ SPOILERS FOR A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, OKAY?

I will update this post as I read. Exciting!

Beautiful, beautiful spoilers: )

Aaand I am stopping for now. I have to say, this book is like... a million times better than AFFC, so far. Not quite up there with ASOS, but there's a lot of action and the plot is generally moving forward and it's not too bogged down in "people I could not give less of a shit about." Points, GRRM, I was worried!

HEY

SO I SAID I WAS GOING TO UPDATE AND THEN NEVER DID, BIG SURPRISE.

HERE'S THE UPDATE: I HURT MY BACK AND I SORT OF HATE MY JOB.

BUT RIGHT NOW THAT'S UNIMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE:

I GOT A DANCE WITH DRAGONS. 12 DAYS EARLY.

AND I'M LITERALLY HOUSEBOUND, SO I HAVE NOTHING TO DO BUT PHOTOSHOP, WOW, AND READ ADWD.

Part of me wants to wait until July 12th so I have other people to talk about it with... but the rest of me knows THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL THAT'S HAPPENING.

ETA: Yes, my resolve lasted all of a half an hour.

2011-06-19 03:37 pm

Welcome home, old friend!

So I saw X-Men: First Class, and ultimately I wound up feeling, about it, the way I feel about the actual X-Men comics: I hated about half of it (the Shaw/war plot, the totally nonsensical 'age of the atom' crap, stupid deaths, clunky writing) and loved about half of it (virtually everything involving the kids, mutant politics, intra-team clashes, etc.).

Actually, that shakes out to almost exactly the things I love and hate about the comics, too, which I guess makes it a pretty great adaptation.

But I used to be hugely into X-Men, so it feels kind of cool to feel that little spark of interest in it again. If the movie had had Nightcrawler instead of his crappy dad (and I don't mean Mystique, ALTHOUGH I SHOULD) I would basically be unable to stop myself from being all the fuck over it right now. As it is, I am still pretty sure I will be happy to read all the fic ever.

I know there's a kinkmeme, but is there anything else? I have to admit, I don't love kinkmemes for fandoms I actually want to get involved with instead of just browsing around in.

I mean, I guess I could just get back into X-Men fandom, but since that involves A: reading comics from a hundred million thousand miles away and B: currently, a world without Kurt some of my favorite cha-- oh, let's face it, I'm talking about Kurt. Anyway, comics piss me off too much, so nah.

Also: has anyone written Sean/Hank yet? IDEK, but I saw it and I'd read it. Or even Charles/Hank, if Charles can stop mooning over Erik for two seconds. POSSIBLY EVEN CHARLES/HANK THAT INVOLVES COMPLICATED FEELINGS ABOUT ERIK AND MYSTIQUE.

Aw, what up, X-Men. ♥

Quick things

1) I know I'm YEARS late to this party, but I saw Wicked for the first time yesterday and despite my not liking the book very much, the show was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. *_* (Actually, I've heard this is how a lot of people who did not like the book much feel, so I guess I should have listened a long time ago. Oops!) One interesting factor is that it was entirely in Japanese, so now I'm listening to the American soundtrack and being like, "Well, this sounds weird." But ugh, I love it, way to go being totally behind on this, self.

2) You guys, I'm not prepared for tonight's/tomorrow's Game of Thrones. I'm just not. How are we down to the last two? D:
