Dear Daenerys Targaryen:

I like you, do you like me? Check one:

Vera

GOSH I JUST LOVE HER SO MUCH. Her scenes in tonight's episode literally made me go "WOOOOOO."

However, I fear that yesterday, I cheated on my magical mystery dragon girlfriend with my new magical wonderhammer Asgardian boyfriend, Thor. Let me tell you about Thor: 1) Thor has a movie! It is a good movie! 2) Thor is SUPER DREAMY in this movie.

There is literally no better adjective to describe Chris Hemsworth's Thor. He's got those big blue Thor(/Kirk) eyes and that big Thor(/Kirk) smile and that romance cover Thor body (not so much a Kirk thing) and basically every time he smiled I quietly had the vapors. Oh, Thor. He is just so dreamy*. *fans self*

Plus, it really was an awesome movie. I LIKE THIS MOVIE, BRING ME ANOTHER.

Oh, speaking of Thor... Cut for very minor Thor spoilers )

PS: Other things that are positively dreamy: Josh Holloway on Community and everyone on Parks and Recreation. EVERYONE. What a wonderful show that's been lately. *sigh*

Oh, Fandomsecrets, sometimes you deliver SO HARD.

Spoilery for A Song of Ice and Fire, books and TV series )

At some point I want to write thoughts about the actual GOT series, which I'm adoring so far, but, alas, another time.

In other news: I'm coming home in TWO DAYS. I can't wait. HEY PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO GO TO THE STEAMPUNK BAR/MARIE'S CRISIS -- WHEN ARE WE GOING?
okayawesome: laura roslin (YOU CAN'T DISAPPOINT A PICTURE)
OH MY GOD.

I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS SHOW GOT SO GOOD.

BUT. WHAT. OH MY GOD.
okayawesome: laura roslin (Default)
...It does look like I won't be going to Worlds after all, at least not this month. Which is, obviously, understandable, but disappointing, especially as I spent a lot of money on the trip.

I'm holding out hope that it gets rescheduled when things are a little safer here, and also not during the week I'll be in New York.
okayawesome: laura roslin (Default)
Because it's a lot more fun and less scary:

Discworld TV series!

In all seriousness, we're still fine down here where I'm at. Things are very scary up north. I've been following the situation and posting updates from NHK/twitter all day on ONTD/fundraising down in the city, so my brain is just... fried at this point. And I still have to go to work tomorrow. Hooray.

Please continue to send your thoughts and prayers to northeast Japan, and if you can afford to give anything, it will be very much appreciated out here.

(But in the meantime, Discworld TV series!)
okayawesome: laura roslin (Default)
I'm alive and perfectly safe -- my part of Japan didn't get hit at all. Shocked and horrified, but safe.

Let's keep Sendai and Miyagi and the surrounds in our thoughts tonight. At least one town up there has been completely destroyed.

Sadly, I've barely had any time to participate in Fandom March Madness this year. :( I was ALL GEARED UP to do some epic campaigning for Troy, but 1) I've been crazy busy and 2) it turns out that I haven't actually really needed to so far! Community fandom is ON THIS SHIT.

Nonetheless...

VOTE KNOPE

You guys, the race between Leslie Knope and Lucille Bluth in Fandom March Madness is getting DANGEROUSLY CLOSE. And God knows I love me some Lucille, but I cannot live in a world where the joy that is Leslie Knope loses this early.

(PS: vote Troy, Juliet, and Nathan while you are there!)

1) IT'S OFFICIAL, LADIES AND GENTS, I AM GOING TO WORLDS. I AM GOING TO THE MEN'S SP.

AND MY SEAT IS FUCKING AMAZING, TO BOOT. I WILL TAKE SO MANY PICTURES OF DAISUKE TAKAHASHI AND RYAN BRADLEY EVERYONE.

2) OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

TROY'S FACE IN MY ICON IS MY FACE EXCEPT MINE IS HAPPIER

Summary: When the university's physics department has some budget cutbacks, Sheldon is the first to suffer. Which means that everyone else is also the first to suffer.

Sheldon looked flabbergasted. “The point that real science can hardly be measured in dollars and cents! And isn't just a matter of throwing a few lug nuts together and hoping the septic tank holds up under pressure!” He waved a hand irritably. “I mean, my God, anyone with a Master's degree can do that.”

“My God,” Penny echoed flatly.

I feel like literally every post I make lately is a "I swear I'm not dead" post. Regardless: I'm not dead!

My life has been alternately super busy and then not busy at all for a solid two-week period where I had the stomach flu and no energy to even write words, so I've been kind of... inactive. Also, there was WoW. But! I have a few things to say:

1) IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR NYC GQMFS AND ALL OTHER NEW YORK TYPES: I WILL BE BACK IN NEW YORK FROM APRIL 28TH-MAY 9TH. ROUND UP THE PARTY PATROL.

2) Media shit: Saw Black Swan, did not like it. Have not seen any other movies, because we don't have those newfangled cinemaplex things out here in the boonies. TV has been kicking ass lately, anyway. Community has returned to being my #1 jam, with Parks in a close second. I already miss Cougar Town. I'm disgustingly addicted to Grey's and really miss Owen, WHERE HAS HE BEEN LATELY? I started watching The Vampire Diaries and Fairly Legal but am fairly ambivalent towards both so far.

3) Speaking of shows I find mediocre, I wrote Big Bang Theory fic! (I kid, I kid... mostly. From what I've seen of the fandom, it seems better than the show itself has been lately.) Which I will post in the next post, so apologies for clogging up your flists.

4) WINTER IS COMING. WINTER IS COMING. You guys, I am getting so fucking excited about this series.

5) And speaking of things I am getting so fucking excited about, there is a fair chance I may, in fact, be going to the figure skating World Championships in Tokyo. *_* Only for one day, only for the Men's SP/Pairs SP (in b4 LOL pairs), but oh my God I might actually get to see both Daisuke Takahashi and Ryan Bradley compete in the same event PROOF THAT DREAMS COME TRUE.
okayawesome: laura roslin (fragile and tightly wound)
Shockingly, I am once again behind on things. WHEN HAS THAT EVER HAPPENED? I ask you.

But for real, I'm still putting together my Yuletide recs, but there was a decent amount of good stuff this year! I especially recommend, without doing the full list, the A Song of Ice and Fire section.

In the meantime, I, myself, wrote fic! Which, according to my LJ, I haven't done since spring, so wow. I totally didn't realize it had been that long.

Title: A Visit From Whitman (Or, 'Twas the Day After Christmas Vacation)
Fandom: Community
Pairing: Gen, but feel free to read Troy and Abed as a couple! I know I do.
Rating: G
Words: 2510
Notes: Written for doorrepairgirl for Yuletide 2010.

Summary: In which Troy and Abed team up to find the missing study group, with help from an unlikely source. Oh, and there's poetry.

They scoured the campus;
or at least thought they did;
They even asked Pavel and
that weird glasses kid.

I also wrote Misfits fic for New Year's Resolution 2011!

Title: The Rise and Fall of Miss Fantastic and the Invisible Man
Fandom: Misfits
Pairing: Simon/Alisha
Rating: R (mostly for language and general Nathan-ness, with a little sex)
Words: 2940
Notes: Written for alyse for Yuletide 2010/New Year's Resolution 2011

Summary: Alisha tells Simon that he's going to be a better man. Simon doesn't tell Alisha that he's getting sick of watching her wait for it.

He's working and working at it, weight training, balance, aim, reflexes—and, of course, the bloody parkour—and it's enough that Nathan sees him with his shirt off after a run and asks, “Who the fuck are you and what have you done with our Barry?”

But every time he comes home with a cut or a bruise, Alisha sees it, and he sees her seeing it.

According to Terry Pratchett, that many exclamation points are the sign of a diseased mind, but I do not care.

So I've been pretty quiet lately! Partly because, as usual, as the year winds to a close, things have been absolutely sucking for me lately. What it is about the holidays and my life, I don't know, but things are always objectively really un-fun around this time of year.

I'm saying this to emphasize was a huge pick-me-up it was to find out that I had three fantastic Yuletide gifts this year! It was a surprise and a delight to read them all. I haven't had a chance to read most of the archive yet, but I did read mine, and of course I had to come and rec them right away:

My 'main' gift, Psychological Factors in Costume Design, is Community, is Troy/Abed with a healthy dose of Jeff thrown in, and is totally awesome. I can't be the only one who absolutely loves that trio, can I? Troy/Abed/Annie warms my heart, but a lot of my favorite throwaway moments on the show are Jeff reluctantly getting involved with Troy and Abed, and this fic does a great job of capturing his mindset when he winds up in the middle of, say, strip poker, or Sesame Street flash mobs. The ending was a sweet, sweet bonus.

And my treats! Swim from the Shallows into the Sea, a Darkangel Trilogy fic, is ACTUAL AERIEL/ERIN do you have any idea how happy that makes me? It is literally the only Aeriel/Erin fic I've ever read, because no one writes Darkangel fic and the few who do don't write Aeriel/Erin, which I find heartbreaking. They're one of my all-time lesbian OTPs. And it's from Erin's POV, even!

Nobody's Pool Boy is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang fic centered around my conviction that all KKBB fic requires a lot of Harry being stupid and doing really, really stupid things. Bless this author for delivering in spades. The Harry is great and the narration is spot-on (I have such a love for fic where he meta-comments on his own narration), but what really made this for me was the perfect Gay Perry, with his nitpicking, turning Harry into a fussy Pomeranian, and booming Take Down Evil voice. I could read ten thousand more words of this.

A huge thank you to my writers, especially the ones who took extra time out to write treats. These stories really gave me a boost when one was needed. ♥

I would love nothing more than to spend all day reading other Yuletide fics, but I have to clean a lot today, so expect another rec post... IDK, sometime during the week! Did I hear something about a Sharktopus fic?

>:(

When you see this on your flist, quote Leo McGarry.

I can't not post the line that makes me cry EVERY TIME, so:

This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out.

A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up 'Hey, can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down the hole and moves on.

Then a Priest comes along and the guy shouts up 'Father! I'm down in his hole. Can you help me out?'. The Priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on.

Then a friend walks by. 'Hey Joe! It's me. Can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole.

Our guy says 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here'. The friend says 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out'.

Long as I got a job, you got a job, you understand?

I have been direly ill all weekend, and also have family shit going on, so except for one mostly-failed attempt at a party, I've been neglecting both my social life and my Yuletide and shutting myself in with this Misfits thing that everyone is suddenly talking about.

Imagine my surprise to find out that unlike certain other shows the entire internet recommended to me, this one is actually awesome! High on the LOL, low on the making me want to kill things (other than, I guess, Alisha's s1 storyline, and the fact that creeper s1!Simon is apparently fandom's woobieface).

Because I am unbelievably and shamefully predictable, my woobieface of choice is, of course, Nathan Young. Loud-mouthed attention-seeking tool with dark hair, blue eyes, an Irish accent, and a deep-seated need for a family? Holy God, I want to go to there. Also, needs moar Nathan/Kelly forever. I fink I fookin' love them.

I also love shows that have extra shit. This one has Twitters and fake Youtube channels! Huzzah.

On the other hand, I pretty deeply hate [livejournal.com profile] rivereyes for getting me into not one but two shows this year right before their season finales. That girl does not know how and when to enable properly. >:(
okayawesome: laura roslin (abed and jeff speak the truth)
SHAKING AND CRYING, YOU GUYS, SHAKING AND CRYING.

I've been having my doubts but this is starting to truly look fucking amazing. I can't wait.

PS: Between this and getting into WoW, I can't help but think that a WoW-style Westeros MMORPG would be the greatest thing ever. Y/N?
okayawesome: laura roslin (my cOmmuniTP)
No, no, don't mind me. Normally I love [livejournal.com profile] community_tv, I'm just hating right now because I watched this week's episode and immediately wanted to talk about how fucking amazing it was, only to find half the community griping about it. Knock, knock! Who's there? Cancer! Oh, good, come in! I thought it was [livejournal.com profile] community_tv!

Slight spoilers )

Plus, actually, can we focus on what's really important, which is heaping praise on Don Glover? I don't think there's another actor out there that could make Troy work the way he does.

Speaking of hate, LOL Grey's Anatomy, I know, but I really hope that everyone griping about Cristina's storyline shuts up after this week's episode. Seriously, just stop. It's awesome.

On a positive note, even though NaNo failed, I'm really looking forward to Yuletide. My assignment is kind of tricky -- I actually wound up picking a fandom I didn't sign up for as opposed to the one I did, but both are a little difficult to right -- but I think it's going to be really fun. Unfortunately, I can't start until Monday, because I have a GIANT EXAM tomorrow. Four hours of Japanese hell that I am going to fail miserably. Yay!

...But then things should get awesome?

Anyway. Happy Chanukah, everyone!
okayawesome: laura roslin (Default)
Well, NaNo failed. A lot. I totally rocked it the first week and then stalled out completely. OH WELL. :(

In other news, people, are you watching Cougar Town? You should be watching Cougar Town.
